About This Event

MAP 1 is a guided reading module that requires the completion of the required reading list, a set number of digests connected to certain of the required readings, one small paper, and one class-wide meeting with the instructor(s) scheduled during the term. MAP 1 is a prerequisite for MAP 2.

This guided reading course focuses attention on texts which either exemplify or elucidate the relationship between the “mechanical arts” and moral formation. Special attention is given to the nature of human labor in the contexts of creation, providence, and culture; craft and craftsmanship or workmanship; the importance and cultivation of “perception”; and forms of theological and pastoral deployment of the acquired skill of perception.

These readings will include considerations from centuries of thinkers, from Hugh of St. Victor and Jeremy Kidwell, to Matthew Crawford, David Pye, Ivan Illich, Robert Farrar Capon, Wendell Berry, and many others. A live discussion with Dr. Mark A. Garcia, Mr. Michael Sacasas, and Mr. Joshua Klein will serve to integrate and enrich the ideas presented throughout the readings and provide foundational thought for the MAP2 hands-on experiences focused on wisdom-breathing engagement with creation.

Dr. Mark A. Garcia

Greystone's founding President, Dr. Garcia, is also Associate Professor of Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, PA, USA, and was the pastor at Immanuel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Coraopolis (Pittsburgh) from 2007 to 2021. He has also been Visiting Scholar in the Faculty of History at Cambridge University and Senior Member of Wolfson College, Cambridge, and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of East Anglia. Over the years he has taught theology at various international Reformed seminaries and institutions. He teaches and writes across the disciplines, and has taught in recent years on the theological-ritual ordering of reality and Christian theory, Reformed catholicity, theological anthropology, New Testament theology, and the nature of Scripture. He has enjoyed research fellowships and awards in Edinburgh, Geneva, and Grand Rapids, MI, and maintains an active research and mentorship program.

Mr. Michael Sacasas

Mr. Sacasas earned his MA in Theological Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary in 2002. Over the years he has taken a special interest in the work of Hannah Arendt and the resources it offers to those seeking to understand the personal and social implications of emerging technologies. He writes at The Convivial Society, and has written about technology and society for a variety of other outlets including The New Inquiry, Rhizomes, The American, Mere Orthodoxy, and Second Nature Journal. Since July 2019, Mr. Sacasas is Director of the Christian Studies Center of Gainesville.

Mr. Joshua Klein

Mr. Klein is founder and editor-in-chief of Mortise & Tenon Magazine. He has been selected for the Early American Life Directory of Traditional American Crafts for his authentic approach to pre-industrial furniture making and has presented about historic craftsmanship at museums around the United States. In addition to his regular essays in Mortise & Tenon, he has written articles for Fine Woodworking, Popular Woodworking, and American Period Furniture, and is author of four books: Hands Employed Aright: The Furniture Making of Jonathan Fisher (1768-1847) (Lost Art Press, 2018), Another Work is Possible (Mortise & Tenon, 2020), Joined: A Bench Guide to Furniture Joinery (Mortise & Tenon, 2020), and Worked: A Bench Guide to Hand-Tool Efficiency (Mortise & Tenon, 2022). Klein, his wife, and their three sons reside on the coast of Maine.
